Naturopathic Medicine: A Solution To The Current Healthcare System
Friday, May 1st, 2009The foundation of the principles of naturopathic medicine is based on the idea that of prevention. When symptoms or health issues arise, a naturopathic physician generally views them as a series of messages that the body is out of balance. The treatment approach is to address the underlying cause of the health imbalance, rather than simply treat the symptoms. Treating the symptoms fundamentally does not address the issue of why they are there in the first place.
As a naturopathic doctor, my role is to promote health and wellness, rather than simply treat the disease. Let us use an example. When someone presents to me with diabetes, cancer, or menstrual irregularities, I will first of all treat them all the same way as people. These people are not simply ‘walking-diabetics’, ‘walking-cancers’, or ‘walking-menstrual irregularities’, these are people who happen to have a health issue. Naturopathic medicine is people-medicine. The idea is to not simply treat the disease, but promote health. Its foundation is rooted in the health-based paradigm, rather than that of a disease-based paradigm.
Thus far, conventional approach to wellness is based on the idea of ‘early’ pharmaceutical interventions, vaccinations, or numerous screenings. This is not wellness, nor does it promote health. To help resolve the current healthcare reform, the fundamental change must take place and it ought to be based on the idea of health-promotion. To promote health is to engage people in healthy lifestyles, or help them change their self-destructive habits, or behaviors. It is to support people and teach what health truly means to them.
Naturopathic medicine offers numerous solutions to the current system. On May 4, 2009, hundreds of naturopathic physicians and supporters will be on Capitol Hill to promote the change of the current health care reform. Both doctors and the supporters of naturopathic medicine will be asking the Members of Congress for their support of H.Con.Res.58. This resolution is crafted to help change the current health care system from one that is disease-based to one that focuses on prevention, and health-promotion.
